Kollel of Greater Boston

The Kollel of Greater Boston is a new, purpose-built center for advanced rabbinic training, adult learning, and communal worship. Located on an irregularly shaped parcel within the Aberdeen Architectural Conservation District, the project required close coordination with Boston’s planning department and Zoning Board of Appeal to secure a special permit.

Small alcoves and open areas connect to a double-height sanctuary and learning center, accommodating both individual study and larger gatherings. The building’s orientation and geometry respond to the site’s unusual shape while drawing natural light into the interior. A carefully sequenced progression of spaces creates a gradual transition from the everyday to the sacred.

Our work extended from the building’s architecture to all interior selections and the custom design of the ark. Collaboration with Israeli artists on the ark cover brought a distinctive artistic expression to the sanctuary’s spiritual focal point.resultant layout facilitates a gradual, linear transition from the ordinary to the sacred.
